Charitable Fashion: TOMS

Posted on March 6, 2011

I am a firm believer that shopping isn’t always a selfish task. Not all corporations are evil conglomerates whose shareholders meet around a long table snickering and wringing their hands together each time they make a dollar. Many companies like to pay it forward. They put your money to good use like clean water, cancer research or saving elephants. Behind what seems to be a steely cage is a beating heart. I hope to spotlight one company or organization every Sunday that makes donations on each purchase. These items will be fashionable daily reminders that you made a conscious decision to save the world or rather “Purchase with Purpose”.

TOMS Shoes One for One Program

For every pair purchased, TOMS provides a pair of new shoes to a child in need. It’s that simple!

The TOMS Story

In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.

As of September 2010, TOMS has given over one million pairs of new shoes to children in need through Giving Partners around the world.

TOMS efforts have been so widely recognized that other brands have sought collaborations with them. Preppy Ralph Lauren sold co-branded Polo Rugby TOMS and Element Skateboards issued limited edition shoes as well as skateboards to benefit Indigo Skate Camp in Durban, South Africa.

Elephants Women's Vegan Classics $54.00

For TOMS spring collection, designers drew inspiration from Dan Eldon, the youngest photojournalist ever for Reuters. He had a lifelong passion with Africa after his family moved to Nairobi, Kenya when he was seven. At 22, he and three colleagues were stoned and beaten to death after a UN bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia. His work has helped send international aid to Somalia.

Not only is TOMS a charitable company, they are also environmentally conscious. You don’t have to be a practicing Vegan to enjoy their Vegan line. Every pair in this line are made from pesticide-free fabric, recycled and sustainable materials. They also have a wedding collection for those who seek comfort on their special day.

TOMS Classic Navy $44.00

If you are inspired to make a purchase, or even just to learn more about TOMS or Dan Eldon, please let me know. My pair to share is TOMS Classic Navy. I love the cute elephant print inside. There are so many great styles to choose from and the price is so affordable that I might have to pick up more than one!
